Grace Jones, without a doubt, is probably one of the fiercest models/artists/performers of our lifetime. For. Real.
Coupled with the fact that she’s been modelling and making incredible music for *hmm* decades, is her ferocious ‘don’t mess with me’ attitude that has kept industry peeps quaking in their boots for yonks. Everyone is both in awe and utterly terrified of her – basically, she’s an absolute boss.
Hula-hooping topless in Hyde Park this summer whilst performing Slave To The Rhythm…at 67 years of age? Yeah, that happened.
So luckily for us massive Grace fans, it just so happens that this trailblazer has finally got around to writing her memoirs…and the likes of Rihanna and Lady Gaga had better watch out, because Grace Jones has some choice words for all of y’all. And let’s face it, you really, really don’t want to pick a fight with the Jones.
In an exclusively published extract of I’ll Never Write My Memoirs (Simon and Schuster) featured in this week’s Time Out, Grace discusses (somewhat bluntly) the modern artists that have followed in her wake…
‘Trends come along and people say, ‘Follow that trend’. There’s a lot of that around at the moment: ‘Be like Sasha Fierce. Be like Miley Cyrus. Be like Rihanna. Be like Lady Gaga. Be like Rita Ora and Sia. Be like Madonna.’ I cannot be like them – except to the extent that they are already being like me.’
She then adds:
‘I have been so copied by those people who have made fortunes that people assume I am that rich. But I did things for the excitement, the dare, the fact that it was new, not for the money, and too many times I was the first, not the beneficiary.’
And it doesn’t stop there. It appears that Grace views many major pop artists as her ‘pupils’….
‘What is teaching but passing on your knowledge to those who are at the beginning? Some people are born with that gift. With me, the teaching side morphed into the performing side. It’s in there. And these are my pupils – Gaga, Madonna, Annie Lennox, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Miley, Kanye West, FKA Twigs…’
Crikey, Ms Jones isn’t pulling any punches here. But does she have a point? Let’s take a look…
1. Good in the Hood
Grace has rocked a fash’ ‘hood’ on and off since the ’80s. Here we see Gaga having a go. Does she pull it off? We aren’t convinced….
2. Battle of the Bodysuit
Whilst Madge’ could realistically give Grace a run for her money in the old ripped bod department, we feel that there is something slightly lacklustre about the Queen of Pop’s spandex selection. Plus, Grace has added matching arm warmers. Yep that’s right, don’t mess with the Jones.
3. Bandages and Body Paint
Grace calls Rihanna out in her book about copying her style. Could Ri-Ri be gunning for Grace’s crown. Would anyone be that daft?
I’ll Never Write My Memoirs is published by Simon and Schuster, and is released on 24th September.
