Rosie, we’re loving your label! What inspires your designs and prints?
Texture plays a huge part in my design process. I see it everywhere so that’s where my ideas for prints start. Menswear is also a big inspiration – using masculine and uniform shapes clashed with cool prints or bright colour ways makes for a really unique feel.
Where does the name come from?
I named it after my grandparents as they were such an inspiration and strong devoted couple. Bill sadly passed away this summer but I’m so happy his memory will always live on through the label.
Which star would you love to see in Bill & Mar?
The red dress
wore to the LOOK Show is a real statement maker, how could a LOOK reader style it?
She wore it so well, such a gorgeous lady! The colour is perfect for the festive season, so I would pair it with lots of gold, statement accessories for an added festive edge. It has quite a Grecian feel with the elegant draping detail so I’d add a really chunky shoe to toughen it up – anything by Jeffrey Campbell would work beautifully.
Tell us how the hook-up with
Topshop approached me as they loved the design aesthetic of Bill & Mar, so I created a new range for them, and B+M was born. I wanted to keep the unique shapes and prints that Bill & Mar are known for but make it more playful and accessible.
What can we expect from Bill & Mar SS13?
Vivid prints designed in-house with clever draping and standout pieces. The colours are amazing and it’s the most exciting collection yet – in my opinion!
What would be your advice to any LOOK readers who want to get into fashion design?
Be prepared to work extremely hard! I worked for Sydney based designer Nikita Sternak when I was 21, which was really helpful as I got a lot more responsibility and I saw every aspect of the business. The business side is just as important than the creative side!
