A lot of people like to relax by reading a book, maybe watching a film, but a while ago, we discovered something so satisfyingly addictive that it’s now possible we can’t relax without it. If you haven’t heard of the Tumblr account Old Loves, we’ve just changed your lives.
Imagine all of your favourite celebrity couples that ever were, all in one place. Yep, we’re talking vintage snaps of Jen and Brad, Johnny and Kate, not to mention all those that came before them. This is what Old Loves will bring to your life. A little moment to relive the A-list loves throughout the decades. And in case you’re in need of a weekday treat, we’ve selected some of our personal favourites for you to peruse. And it all starts with the love affair to end all love affairs…
Yes, of course we’re talking about Britney and Justin. Only the purest love could originate in The Mickey Mouse Club, and only our favourite pop stars could pull off matching denim outfits. And, it has to be said that only your first love could persuade you to wear co-ordinating Canadian tuxedos in a red carpet situation. Britney told the world just how in love she was, what a great kisser JT is (obv) and how she was destined to marry him. Justin said it was love at first sight. We so wanted it to last but, alas, Stinky and Pinky weren’t to be.
Back when Mandy Moore, 31, was a pop princess and Wilmer Valderrama, 35, was that guy from That 70s Show, the pair enjoyed a two-year romance, which ended in 2002. But by the looks of the above picture, that Mandy posted on her Instagram, the pair are still close as ever. “I’ve known this goof since I was 15!” She wrote, while at Universal Studios together.
Apparently, Britney cheated on Justin, causing his (along with the rest of the world’s) heart to break. Love’s young dream was destroyed, and we no longer believed in double denim. It wasn’t all bad though. Justin wrote Cry Me A River about the break-up, and that’s an absolute banger.
We had to give a little shout out to the masters of awkward, slightly uncomfortable PDAs, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. A Hollywood power couple of the 90s, their relationship seems so much creepier if you’ve seen Eyes Wide Shut. IRL, it was probably great, and we’re pretty sure no sex cults were involved. Aren’t they photogenic?

Speaking of Hollywood power couples, here’s Gwyneth Paltrow with Brad Pitt! Yes, we know, we forgot about these two as well. At a time when Gwyneth was our 90s beauty icon and Brad wore Rasta hats (yes, really), they met, fell in love, got engaged, and broke up. But it was beautiful, nonetheless. Gwyneth has said: “I definitely fell in love with him. He was so gorgeous and sweet. But I was such a kid. I was 22 when we met…I wasn’t ready, and he was too good for me.” We can’t cope.
Gwyneth has also spoken out about her break-up with Ben Affleck, although he didn’t quite come out of it as well as Brad. “He was not in a good place in his life to have a girlfriend,”the actress has said. We hear you, Gwyneth. He does seem quite into it in these pictures though, to be fair.
There was only one thing better than Cruel Intentions. Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon. Is there anything more to say?

Um, who remembers when Keira Knightley went out with Jamie Dornan? Way before she was married to James Righton, and when 50 Shades was but a fantasty in E.L James’ head, Jamie and Keira enjoyed two years together. They went from the red carpet to Glasto via lots of baggy denim, reminding us that it’s actually not just Britney and Justin who were fans of the matching look.

While we’re talking about Jamie Dornan, let’s take a second to remember when his now-wife, Amelia Warner, was on the arm of Colin Farrell. Hollywood sure is a small town.

We almost didn’t want to bring this up, because we know how everyone feels about it, but in honour of The Notebook, we had to. It was reported that when they first met on the set of the film, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams really didn’t get on. But, proving that it really is the romcom to end all romcoms, the two fell in love and started dating when the film wrapped. Cue THE CUTEST little snuggles on red carpets everywhere, and one of the most beautiful couples that ever existed. Le sigh.
We thought we should probably wrap things up with our homegirl, Kate Moss. If ever there was a couple to encapsulate all our favourite things about the 90s, it was possibly Kate and Johnny Depp. He was a Hollywood rebel, she was an era-defining supermodel. What’s not to love? Kate spoke to Vanity Fair about the ‘years and years of crying’ that followed their breakup, making us all feel a bit better about our own sorry selves. If Kate spends an inappropriate amount of time sobbing over an ex, it’s probably ok for us to do so, too.
