Soz, HP, there's a new wizard in town...
UPDATE: The trailer is here. This is not a drill. I repeat, the trailer is here.
Yep, the footage was released at Comic Con over the weekend, and boy are we in for a treat.
The film actually marks J.K. Rowling’s first foray into screenwriting, but if the trailer is anything to go by, the Harry Potter movies might be about to meet their match.
The plot goes a bit like this; a Hogwarts alumni (played by Eddie Redmayne) arrives in America but runs into trouble after a load of magical beasts escape from his briefcase. And the rest? Well, we won’t give it away, but if you hadn’t planned on finding out for yourself, we suggest you do so. Bring on November 18th.
14/9/15: Eddie Redmayne may be an Oscar winner, but he’s still nervous about his turn in new Harry Potter film Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
The actor takes the lead role as magizoologist Newt in the movie – and he really, really wants to get it right.
‘The stakes are high because they were so good before. You don’t want to screw it up,’ Eddie tells E! News.
‘It’s a complete privilege for me. I love J.K. Rowling. I love the Harry Potter films [and] books so for me this is just the most wondrous gift really.’
Colin Farrell is also rumoured to have landed a role in the flick.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Irish hunk will play a wizard named Graves, who crosses paths with Newt in New York.
So what do we know about the film so far? Well, Katherine Waterston is set to take on the part of Porpentina – a witch who practices her magic in America.
She meets Newt when he visits New York, as part of his quest to document magical creatures.
If you recognise the 35-year-old beauty, it’s because Waterston most recently appeared in Inherent Vice with Joaquin Phoenix. And we can’t wait to see her do her thing in the wizarding world.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them will be part of a whole new TRILOGY of Harry Potter films. We know the news was announced last year, but somehow we had forgot. Which makes this casting news all the more exciting.
Warner Bros. announced the news that Eddie would be joining the cast earlier this year in a special statement.
‘Eddie Redmayne has emerged as one of today’s most extraordinarily talented and acclaimed actors’, Warner Bros said in their statement. ‘We are thrilled to welcome him into J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World, where we know he will deliver a remarkable performance as Newt Scamander, the central character in ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.’
So what else do we know about Newt? Well, he’s going to be the first-ever magizoologist of the wizarding world and his textbook, Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, was used by Harry, Hermione and Ron in Hogwarts.
In the film, fans will see him creating this textbook as he explores the world for magical creatures which he can document in the book.
The screenplay will be written by Rowling herself and the film directed by David Yates (who directed the last four HP films). Woop!
‘Eddie is a fearless actor, brimming with invention, wit and humanity’, David added. ‘I couldn’t be more excited about the prospect of working with him as we start this new adventure in J.K. Rowling’s wonderful world, and I know she feels the same way.’
We know Eddie’s already bagged Oscars for The Theory Of Everything and has accumulated massive box office success, but surely dressing up in a wizard’s cloak and casting spells with the Harry Potter clan will be his coolest accolade yet?
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set for a November 2016 release.
