Yes, we know it’s only October, but it’s never to early to start planning your party season wardrobe. And, if you’ve picked up this week’s issue of LOOK (out today) you’ll see we’ve got the scoop on the glammest party range hitting the high street this season, Miss Selfridge’s Premium collection. Packed with intricate beading, lashings of sequins and party perfect cuts, this vintage inspired line will guarantee you’re the belle of any ball. The glam packed creations are based on original dresses from the 20s right through to the 80s, and we caught up with Miss Selfridge creative director and in-house vintage expert Yasmin Yusef to get the design low-down…
LOOK: The collection looks great Yasmin, where did it all start?
Yasmin: At Miss Selfridge we are lucky enough to have access to our enormous vintage archive which has been curated from our travels over the years. We selected items through the decades to inspire the range. There’s a real cross section – from the 20’s right through to the 90’s. The 1920’s pieces are always my favourite finds and I think you can really see the influence.
L: Which decades are the original dresses from? Do you have a favourite era?
Y: There’s a real cross section – from the 20’s right through to the 90’s. The 1920’s pieces are always my favourite finds and I think you can really see the influence from that era in some of the Premium designs.
L: How have the vintage cuts been updated for a modern wardrobe?
Y: We’ve used modern silhouettes and shorter hem lines to make the range really wearable and current. We’ve taken design inspiration and blocks from vintage items and given them a modern update. A beautiful panel of embellishment that we found on a stunning 20’s dress has been applied to a new design as an all over beaded effect.
L: Which pieces couldn’t you wait to recreate?
Y: Some of the floor length gowns were really exciting and special for us to work on – they’re so striking and feel like couture gowns that you’d find on the red carpet. Our girls love glamour and getting dressed up so we can’t wait to see their reaction to these premium designs.
L: The fabrics and details feel really special, what can people expect?
Y: The sheer amount of workmanship that goes into each dress is incredible. They are all hand beaded, there’s lots of beautiful sheer fabric and embellishment. It feels very luxe and perfect for this time of year.
L: How would you style the dresses?
Y: When we designed the collection a big focus was making sure each piece could be styled in more than one way. They’re perfect for a decadent party but can also be rocked up with a love worn leather biker or with the slip removed and worn over denim shorts.
L: Which piece do you predict will be a sell out?
Y: It’s really hard to say as the designs are all so unique and special in their own way.
L: Is there anyone you’d love to see wearing the pieces on the red carpet?
Y: I’d be proud and flattered if any of the upcoming starlet chose our dresses over the many designer gowns available today.
