During the last few days of the Cannes Film Festival, the annual amfAR Gala is always the glitziest event with the red carpet lit up by a supernova of models, ‘it’ girls, ‘it’ boys and of course, Hollywood’s finest. This year was no exception, as an army of stars arrived in force, floor-sweeping gowns at the ready. While the likes of Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Lara Stone and Toni Garn opted for barely-there dresses, Diane Kruger was one of the only guests to ignore the current trend for cut-away, plunging, thigh-slit frocks.
In a Chanel creation from the Pre-Fall 2015 collection, Diane’s dress featured sheer sleeves, applique detail and a feather skirt scattered with multi-colours. Teaming it with simple Gianvito Rossi heels and a fuchsia clutch, Diane posted a picture of herself to her Instagram page along with the caption: ‘I know this won’t be for everyone, but I LOVE me some @chanelofficial! I’m SO SICK OF GLITTER SEE THROUGH GOWNS!’ Sounds like the actress might be reacting to the onslaught of flesh-flashing outfits at the Met Gala, as Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce were among the stars in form-fitting, nude gowns scattered with sparkle.
Diane wasn’t the only A-lister to flout the dress code either, as Alicia Vikander arrived in a look from Louis Vuitton’s recent Resort show. As the new face of the brand, Alicia chose a leather maxi skirt, crop top and strappy sandals, making for a more casual look.
And another surprise of the night had to be Marion Cotillard wearing something other than Dior. As an ambassador for the French fashion house, Marion has a wardrobe filled with incredible Dior dresses, but for the amfAR event she instead chose a striking green column dress from Jean Paul Gaultier’s SS15 Couture collection. Accessorising with a diamond necklace, side-swept waves and a red lip, Marion was the epitome of old-Hollywood glamour.
Now that the daily sartorial parade (otherwise known as Cannes) is almost over, we have to say we’re going to miss the frock-athon. And, however you feel about those naked dresses, you’ve got to give Diane credit for going against the grain and taking a (well considered) fashion risk. We just hope that Beyonce doesn’t follow her on Instagram…
