Currently on a tour of Europe with pop sensation Katy Perry, Charli XCX is the name on everybody’s lips. We sat down with the English singer/songwriter to get to know the girl behind the stage name.
Real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison, this musical lass began writing music at the age of 14, and released her debut album back in 2012. A self made star, Charlotte first launched her music on MySpace, before performing her first gigs at raves around London, securing a cult-like underground following.
The 22 year old has collaborated with chart topper Iggy Azalea (also appearing in the Clueless style video), and has also supported Coldplay and Paramore on tour.
With the 2015 BRIT Awards happening tonight, Charli reflects on her past BRITs experience, “It was very very unexpected”. She found out about her win on the way to a party, “I text my mum like ‘Mum, on my way home, stopping off at Burger King, won a Brit’”
She has an eclectic mix of musical tastes and influences, ranging from rap to punk rock, and also pop music. She admits to being a fan of newcomer FKA Twigs, “I don’t actually know her that well but I’m a fan. I love her work.” And we HAD to ask: “No, I haven’t met Rob!”
Rita Ora features on her January release, Doing It. Charli exclaims, “I love her. She is just so down to earth and she’s a star. She’s one of the most genuine people in this industry.”
She goes on, “I almost killed her though. We were driving in this pink pick-up truck on the other side of the road. She couldn’t drive and I’m a terrible driver so it was pretty shaky. I nearly crashed into the cameraman but we were alright. We made it out…”
Naturally, we had to quiz her about her style. “I do like dressing up and I think my perfect wardrobe would be a cross between Cher Horrawitz and Wednesday Adams.” Interesting combo!
One thing she’d never be seen dead in? “Crocs. Although I reckon in five years time they are going to become the most cult fashion accesory ever and I’ll probably wear them then.” Sorry, Charlotte, we don’t think we’d even sport them then.
Describing herself as a “hardcore shopper”, the singing sensation talks her fave spots: “There’s nothing better than going to a vintage store and finding an amazing piece that you know noone else has. But I’m a fan of Topshop and H&M stuff like that. There are always great basics in there.”
And her fave era? The ’90s of course! “I feel that’s when fashion runway was so sassy and fierce. Like Naomi Campbell, Tyra, and the Versace runways.”
And designer? “I’m a big Moschino fan, especially now Jeremy Scott’s working with them.”
She’s almost known in the fashion world as much as the music one, having recently signed with top model agency Select. She’s in good company, as they also look after Paloma Faith and Abbey Clancy. The Head of Women’s Special Bookings at Select said: “She has such a cool, fashion-forward look and is so different to anyone else we have on our books. We predict huge things for her in 2015.”
Charli has been nominated for her Boom Trap video. The BRIT Awards airs tonight on ITV, at 8pm.
