The sheer dress has been having a major moment on red carpets lately, with everyone from Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez to Beyonce heralding the barely-there trend. But, it seems, not everyone’s a fan…
When legendary designer Carolina Herrera was asked about the sexy sheer gowns seen taking over this year’s Met Gala in a new interview with the Washington Post, she didn’t mince her words.
‘They’re supposed to be fashion icons and they’re not wearing anything,’ the 76-year-old said in a reportedly exasperated tone. ‘It’s an obsession now.’
“It’s so modern to be naked or almost naked. They think it’s going to attract young people if they do those dresses. No!’ Eesh!
While Kim showed off her famous assets in a feathery Roberto Cavalli creation, Beyonce opted for a heavily-jewelled Givenchy dress to flash the flesh on the night of the Gala.
Carolina continued: ‘The almost naked! Oh God! They’re trying to get people to pay attention to them. In life, there should be a little mystery.’
Herrera is known for her subtle, classic designs that ooze elegance. In fact, Lily Aldridge was working one of her dresses on the Met Gala red carpet – a dove grey gown with a keyhole cut-out.
Speaking about how a plunging neckline can easily veer the wrong side of classy, Carolina explained: ‘If it’s open so much, they [the cleavage] look like fried eggs. Fashion is about proportion.’
There’s no denying the naked dress is a sure-fire way to grab attention. And we’ll hand it to Kim and Bey – their bodies did look ah-mazing in their designer gowns. Plus, what’s the harm in flaunting what you’ve got?
