Caitlyn Jenner has finally given her opinion on that dodgy Halloween costume that was created in her honour (and that caused a huge amount of uproar in the media last month).
Mirroring the outfit and hair (yes, the monstrosity comes complete with its very own Jenner wig) of Caitlyn’s iconic Vanity Fair cover, the fancy dress ensemble is comprised of a basque and a sash that reads: “Call Me Caitlyn”. This, of course, was the cover line for Caitlyn’s big reveal, which hit stands in June this year.
We thought it was pretty terrible. But what did Caitlyn think? Well, actually, she took it pretty damn well.
‘I’m in on the joke. I don’t think it’s offensive at all,’ she told The Today Show. ‘I know the community does and they’ve gotten a lot of criticism for doing it. I think it’s great.’
She added: ‘To be honest with you, I think it’s great. They could have a better looking outfit for him, you know?’
‘We could have done my own costume,’ she joked. ‘I mean, that was a serious bustier on the cover of Vanity Fair, you know?’.
While we applaud Jenner’s good humour, but we still think the whole thing was pretty gross.

The former Olympian has become a widely celebrated and inspirational figure, and we applaud her. The idea of belittling her with a Halloween costume – on the night when you’re supposed to dress up as something scary – is really quite unfair. And, we’re pleased to say, the internet seems to agree.

Since this costume went viral, fans and supporters of Caitlyn have taken to Twitter to share their outrage. One wrote: “What kind of society are we to allow ppl to mock @Caitlyn_Jenner on Halloween with a costume!”
The tweets kept coming: “The Halloween costume based off Caitlyn Jenner’s vanity fair cover pic is truly the most despicable concept I’ve heard in a long time…”
Another said “This is so freaking mean and cruel.. Cait is corageous and beautiful and yes even a role model. How dare people…”
Speaking to The Huffington Post, the PR for the manufacturers said:
“At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes,” she said. “We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that.”
A petition has also been started to get the costume removed from the retailer’s website. The campaign, which can be found on Change.org, already has almost 7,000 signatures, and many more have been sparked by the collective anger at the costume.
Entitled ‘Stop Exploiting Caitlyn Jenner with a Transphobic Costume’, the petition says, “…if you follow through with production of a Caitlyn Jenner costume, cisgender people will purchase it to make fun of her and our community. At a time when trans women and GNC folx, especially black trans women, are being murdered at such a high rate, and homelessness, unemployment, and inaccessbility to healthcare run rampant in our community, making fun of one or all of us is utterly insensitive and deplorable.”
