Vanity Fair’s International Best Dressed list is the most revered of style rankings, but this year’s results may surprise you. While 2014’s list saw Cate Blanchett in the number one spot, followed by the likes of Lupita Nyong’o and Emma Watson, this year’s winner is not a member of Hollywood’s elite. The most stylish woman in the world is, apparently, Samantha Cameron, our very own First Lady.
Yep, the Prime Minister’s wife has nabbed the top spot thanks to her wardrobe filled with British designers including Roksanda, Alexander McQueen, Erdem, Peter Pilotto and Preen. No stranger to the world of fashion, Samantha was creative director at Smythson until 2010, when she took on a consultancy role, and she also serves as an ambassador for the British Fashion Council. Favouring bold prints and colour, shift dresses and tailored separates are Samantha’s staples, while her accessories are usually neutral.
So who did Samantha Cameron beat? Well, Taylor Swift took second place thanks to her preppy polish, while the rest of the list contained a few wildcards. In at number three is Misty Copeland, the principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, one of the leading classical ballet companies in the US. Misty has shot to fame after becoming the first African American woman to be promoted to principal status, and has cited Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Richie as her style icons.
Fourth place was taken by the Countess of Wessex, largely thanks to the Emilia Wickstead dress she wore to Royal Ascot, while number five on the list is Amal Clooney. Then comes Rihanna, followed by Charlotte Casiraghi (Grace Kelly’s granddaughter and the face of Gucci Cosmetics) and Queen Letizia of Spain, who’s a big fan of high street brands including Uterque.

We have to say we didn’t see that one coming. For starters, the only British royal in the top ten is not, as we predicted, Kate Middleton, and we couldn’t have guessed that Rihanna would be sandwiched between Mrs.Clooney and the eighth in line to the throne of Monaco.

If you’re wondering where your favourite A-listers are, chances are they did make an appearance in the Hollywood list, comprised solely of actors. And, according to Vanity Fair, Tinsel Town’s sartorial queen is Alicia Vikander, the new face of Louis Vuitton, while second place went to Brit boy Eddie Redmayne. Emma Stone, Sienna Miller, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Fan Bingbing, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Emma Watson and Diane Kruger were also on the list, making for one impressive roll call.
There’s also a best dressed couples list (yes, really). And guess who’s the world’s most stylish twosome? Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter! Yep, thanks to Sophie’s love of designers including Margiela and Erdem. For her wedding to Benedict, she wore an amazing, bespoke gown by Valentino (sigh), which featured intricate embroidery and an empire silhouette.

We’re off to study the stylish secrets of these influential dressers. Now, are we more of a SamCam or a Rihanna? While we deliberate on that, you can see each of the lists in full right here. Until next year…
