Bella Hadid’s Heartbreaking Struggle With Lyme Disease

Writing in her Bravo TV column this week, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star focused on a much more serious topic than usual – her children’s battle with Lyme Disease. Yolanda explained to her fans that both Bella and her brother, Anwar were diagnosed with the disease at the end of 2013, and potentially contracted the infection as a result of their outdoor lifestyle at their Santa Barbara ranch.

Lyme disease is transmitted to humans by the bite of a tick carrying the disease, and the symptoms include extreme tiredness, muscle and joint pain, upset digestive system, headaches, disturbances of the central nervous system, and poor sleeping patterns.

Yolanda described that for Bella the most difficult aspect of living with the disease is putting her horse-riding career on hold.

> Bella used to love riding competitively

Yolanda wrote: “Bella had to give up her lifelong dream of having a professional riding career and a shot at the Olympics due to her severe symptoms and inability to ride. This was the biggest heartbreak of her life and an extremely sensitive subject for her.”

With her Olympic dreams behind her Bella is now following in the steps of sister Gigi and focusing on modelling instead.

“She is resilient and focused on a new direction–she’s made a name for herself in the modelling industry while she struggles with symptoms of chronic Lyme every day,” Yolanda said.

Yolanda is determined to draw a positive from her children’s experience by raising awareness of the disease. “I want to leave this earth a better place with answers and education on Lyme and invisible chronic disease,” Yolanda commented.

This week the star shared a picture via her Instagram account of Bella receiving treatment with the caption:

2015-Watching my brave babies suffer in silence in order to support me in my journey has struck the deepest core of hopelessness inside of me, it is because of them that I continue to fight relentlessly……. I will not allow them to live a life of pain and suffering……. I will prevail and walk to the end of the earth to find a cure for them and millions of others debilitated by this invisible disease!!!! We all deserve to live a healthy life, don’t you think?
