History was made at New York Fashion Week on Tuesday when plus-size model and body-positive campaigner Ashley Graham held the very first plus-size catwalk to show the latest collection from her lingerie line for Canadian brand Addition Elle.
The size 16 model both directed and walked in the show alongside a number of fellow plus-size models clad in the brand’s spanking new collection which, needless to say, was equally as memorable.
From black lace balconette bras and deep purple mesh insert sets to cute silk teddies, the ready-to-wear holiday collection dubbed Black Orchid is designed with specific attention paid to meet the needs of fuller-figured ladies.
Various daytime looks including baby doll dresses, tops, skirts and jackets also hit the runway.
Upon closing, 28-year-old Ashley took to Instagram to say: “What an amazing experience! All the girls looked amazing!! I hope you were able to watch the show live on @additionelle’s Periscope!! Thank you to everyone who was involved behind stage as well!! We rocked it!! #IamSizeSexy.”
Meanwhile, Ashley has also been pioneering a similar campaign coined #PlusIsEqual in collaboration with plus-size retailer Lane Bryant. In a bid to promote diversity in models, Ashley stars in Lane Bryant’s latest ad campaign alongside fellow models Candice Huffine, Georgia Pratt, Justine Legault, Sabina Karlsson and Precious Victoria Lee.
According to the brand’s press release, Ash says: “Size shouldn’t matter when you’re talking about a woman who just wants to be fashionable.”
And, following the backlash against Victoria Beckham’s “show of skeletons” on Sunday, the show comes as a welcome addition to the New York Fashion Week schedule. As well as size, the show also saw models of multiple ethnicities strut their stuff for the designer.
All in all, the Ashley Graham show made for one we certainly won’t be forgetting in a hurry. Congrats, Ash!
