UPDATE 27/3/17: In December, we heard that Amy would play Barbie in the new film, but according to Variety magazine, Amy will no longer play the lead role.
She told the publication: ‘Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.’
A Sony spokesperson commented: ‘We respect and support Amy’s decision. We look forward to bringing Barbie to the world and sharing updates on casting and film-makers soon.’
The original announcement incited a lot of abuse since Amy did not emulate the ‘perfect physique’- their words, not ours- which leads us to question whether her decision to pull out was solely due to ‘scheduling conflicts’. We sure hope so…
6/12/16: On Friday, it was announced that Amy Schumer will play an ‘imperfect’ Barbie in an upcoming Sony film about the doll.
Yeah, we were pretty excited too, and then we saw the comments from a little thing we like to call, trolls.
The movie, slated to arrive in summer 2018, tells the story of Schumer in a land of ‘perfect’ Barbies who, after being expelled from the world, goes on an adventure and returns to save her hometown armed with the knowledge that real beauty is on the inside – who knew?!
Sounds pretty darn good to us, but body shamers wasted no time criticising the news.
@MarkDice wrote: “Amy Schumer was cast as Barbie’s fat, loud mouth nemesis right? No? SHE is playing Barbie? Hahaha! Is this a horror film?”
It gets worse…
@sandrosilva wrote: “@amyschumer is way too fat to play Barbie. Maybe she could play 3 Barbies.”
@modernlifedater added: “Amy Schumer as Barbie? More of the elites plan to brainwash young girls into thinking being fat is ok. Guess what? Guys don’t like fat girls.”
It’s not all bad, though. Others are jumping to Amy’s defence and praising the decision to cast a curvy lady in the lead role.
@AlexisGoldenXXX wrote: “The only way I’d watch a movie about #Barbie is if @amyschumer was starring in it.”
@annie_anita commented: “The sh*t people are saying about Amy Schumer as Barbie is awful. You do get that the original doll is bad for girls’ body image, right?”
You can say that again!
Mattel has been doing its best to rid Barbie of her stereotype with more inclusive doll sizes and skin tones recently, but we reckon Schumer’s charisma, likeability and humour (we could go on) could be what we really need to turn things around. Go Amy!
