Alexa Chung stole the show at the Fashion Awards thanks to her Prada ensemble. Here's why a feather trim is the one detail your wardrobe needs right now...
Among the fussy gowns and barely there outfits, Alexa Chung stood out on the red carpet at the Fashion Awards for all the right reasons. She chose an embellished pyjama-style two piece in the palest of lemon shades from Prada’s SS17 collection. The pièce de résistance? The marabou feather trim. It felt unexpected, fresh and- in a sea of satin- entirely elegant.
Miuccia Prada’s marabou fixation was a strong focal point for next season, as seen on everything from trench coats and sandals to skirt hems and clutch bags. It felt like a throwback to the old Hollywood glamour of the 1930s and 40s while still appearing utterly modern and wholly desirable- that classic Prada combination. And seeing Alexa’s co-ord go up against the likes of Atelier Versace’s structured jumpsuit (on Gigi Hadid) and Julien MacDonald’s transparent, cut-out catsuit (on Nicole Scherzinger) only helped to reinforce that feeling.
For once, Alexa wasn’t the first to try this trim; Sienna Miller made her own case for Prada’s feathers a couple of months ago at the New York Film Festival, with equally excellent results. She opted for a similar outfit (belted top and matching trousers) but with a more vibrant trim in contrasting colours.
While the high street might take a while to catch on, there are some feather trims already on the market. From LBDs to cami tops and block heel shoes, there’s certainly enough to keep you going until the new season hauls start dropping. The best way way to pull a Prada right now? ASOS’s detachable cuffs, which can be added to anything (simple knits, your winter coat, long sleeved party tops) and only cost £8.
