For autumn/winter ’15, Adidas by Stella Sport have teamed up with none other than fitness fanatics Shannon and Cheriece Hylton. Incase you haven’t already heard of them, the 18-year-old Hylton twins have long reigned supreme as Great Britain’s 200m and 400m track stars, with the 2016 Olympics set firmly in their sights. But as well as all that, the Hyltons are always on hand to give us some serious gym style-spo. We caught up with the girls to find out exactly how they balance it all..
How did you get into sport?
Shannon: We first started off doing dance, we danced 5 times a week and it included ballet, tap, and acrobatics. We got introduced into athletics by being scouted in primary school. From there we got invited to the Bees Academy every Saturday morning, which included a range of athletic activities not just running… We found our love for sprinting and haven’t stopped since really!
Cheriece: We always loved to run! In the playground we’d always play games that included running around or chasing people rather than playing games like hopscotch and things like that. We got scouted in primary school, and were invited to our first athletics competition in Year 5, which was the London Youth Games… And we absolutely loved it!
Do you workout together?
Shannon: Yes! We keep each other on our toes, working out together also helps to push each other harder, in this sport you have your own individual pressures and it’s just nice to have someone to offload it with. I couldn’t imagine being by myself; it’d be weird. We pretty much go everywhere together, so the thought of getting a bus to training or getting in a car to go to a Champs by myself and things like that just seems weird.
What’s your favourite exercise?
Cheriece: Sprinting! It is just so dynamic and exciting. Having the adrenaline pump through my body just makes me want to go! I always get so nervous when I’m about to race, but I love that I care enough to feel nervous. I love my sport.
And your worst?
Cheriece: For me, its long distance, I don’t really find joy in running for a long time. I just love going fast!
What do you think it takes to become an Olympian?
Cheriece: First, and foremost you have to be committed and dedicated. There are going to be a lot of distractions, especially at university/school, so you have to stay focused on what you want.
I guess you could say that you have to be a little bit selfish to get yourself where you want to be.
Shannon: I think what it takes to become an Olympian is hard work and all round discipline. You have to be disciplined with your diet, your sleep and general lifestyle decisions to prepare your body for the big event. I also think it takes belief in yourself—you need to believe you can achieve to get there. I think having a positive and confident mind plays a huge part in successful performances.
Were you excited to team up with adidas Stella Sport? What do you love about the label? What are your favourite pieces from the collection?
Cheriece: Definitely!! I felt so honoured to be part of this amazing campaign. I love how brave Stella’s been with the prints and bright colours. She got it spot on! I’m in love with the black and white graphic tights/tank top combo and the irana shoes. They. Are. Fierce.
Shannon: I was super excited to team up with adidas StellaSport! I know Stella designed the GB Track and Field 2012 Olympic kit which was amazing, so when I found out she was collaborating with adidas with a new sports clothing line, I knew it was going to be insane!
What I love most about the collection are the bright and bold colours- they add a chic yet sporty twang to my sports wardrobe. My favourite pieces from the collection is the maroon running performance jacket, the racer- back sports bras (they’re so comfy!) and the Zais trainers.
Are you big fashion fans? What are your favourite high street shops?
Cheriece: I love fashion! Shopping is my second favourite thing to do, behind being an athlete. Somedays I like to keep my style really minimalistic- a lot of dark colours, or monochrome. Other days I like to be bold, and wear brighter colours or prints. French Connection, ZARA and TopShop are my top 3 favourite high street shops. I also love to pop into American Apparel and Urban Outfitters once in a while.
Shannon: I do love fashion. I follow many bloggers on Instagram such as Sarah Ashcroft and Nyané Lebajoa who I gain inspiration from especially with accessories because I have a thing for rings and sunglasses at the moment. My favourite high street shops would have to be Zara, Topshop, and American Apparel- I would buy all of their clothes if I could!
Could the Hylton twins be the most fashionable athletes to date? We think so. For more exercise tips, head to www.adidasstellasport.tumblr.com.
