LOOK Meets The Hairdresser Behind The A-List’s Colour

SEE MORE: Kylie Jenner Reveals All Her Beauty Secrets

Think of every celebrity colour crush you’ve ever had: if Lily Aldridge, Jennifer Lopez or Khloe Kardashian’s blonde transformation comes to mind then you already know just how good Tracey is.

Redken’s Creative Consultant For Colour, Tracey is not just a colourist, she’s the queen of colour, seriously. A family friend of Lily Aldridge and the Kardashian’s, her list of celebrity and model clientele is endless – before transitioning to a blonde bombshell, Kylie Jenner revealed in an interview: “I want to see Tracey Cunningham because I want to go blonde soon. She’s supposed to be the best with blondes.” Trust us, if you’ve seen a star with enviably sun-kissed locks, we bet she’s behind it.

You only need to look at her Instagram – @traceycunningham1, to see some of her amazing work. Her trademark is impossibly perfect colour woven throughout the hair, you know the kind that looks like you’ve just returned from a month in the sun (aka what everybody wants).

Her colour creations emerge from a combination of prescribed techniques depending on the person’s natural hair colour, hair type and skin tone, and with people queuing up for her (she won’t take on new clients in order to allow time for her original ones), we knew we had to meet the colourista.

What look are celebrities asking for most at the moment, what is your most requested colour?

Lily Aldridge’s colour is still one of my most requested. I’ve known Lily since she was really little, we’re family friends, and even from when she was a child her hair would naturally just go like that. A lot of people want to dye hers and Chrissy Teigen’s hair dark because they think about that darker type of Latino look, but actually both of their hair was quite blonde when they were little, so that’s the colour that suits them most.

You’ve recently taken Khloe Kardashian to a gorgeous ashy blonde, do you have any tips or suggestions for brunettes looking to go blonde without it going ginger?

Take your time! Khloe’s blonde didn’t happen overnight, we’d been taking out the brown over 3-4 months and now we’ve reached the blonde she wants. A good sulfate free shampoo is crucial for keeping your blonde cool, so make sure you use one post salon. My favourites are Redken Blonde Idol Shampoo and Custom Conditioner, £17.30, and Pureology Perfect 4 Platinum Reconstruct Repair Masque, £25.15, they’re amazing at knocking out brassy tones and will keep you the brightest blonde!

Chrissy Teigen is my ultimate colour inspo – how did you create her amazing honey colour for the Golden Globes?

I created her highlights using foils and Shades EQ Cream all over – I couldn’t live without it, it’s the only product that gets those gorgeous golden tones.

A lot of people have a fear of streaky highlights and unfortunately we can’t fly out to your salon! What would you suggest asking for in order to achieve similar results to your colour creations?

Say key words like subtle and natural. The sun naturally lightens the ends of the hair so I always keep a bit of root (darker colour at the top), and take it lighter through the ends.

What do you predict will be the biggest colour trend this summer?

People always ask me this question, but its super hard to answer because I just don’t know what’s going to happen between now and summer. But, if I had to choose I’d say probably babylights, like I did for Gwyneth Paltrow.
