Smokestack hair is about to become your new obsession. How do we know? Because it has just made the top of our to-do list.

This new trend is the latest dye technique to come out of the internet’s obsession with rainbow coloured hair hues, but this one’s had a dark, autumnal makeover.

Celebrities ranging from Kelly Osbourne, Caroline Flack, Katy Perry and Hilary Duff have played around with pop colour dye jobs, and bloggers and stylistas have ensured that it’s become the most coveted ‘do on Instagram

And thanks to this new colour combination, we’re sure pastels won’t be going anywhere in a hurry.

The smokestack trend was brought about by colourist Vadre Grigsby from Pravana. Taking on the hottest shades of grey and purple, they have created a new blend of tones which brings the Smokestack shade to life.

The colour blend layers panels of different shades at the nape of the neck up to the top of the hair line, going gradually from dark to light.

Altogether it creates a smoky colour effect which gradually shimmers with movement.

Like most rainbow shades, the dye takes best to light or bleached hair, which can be seen in the tutorial video

By sectioning parts of the hair, you can gradually apply varying shades of violet, pink and blue to the layers.
