Rihanna in New York

Rihanna Brings Back 90s Minnie Mouse Buns

Oh, Rihanna – she’s the girl with a thousand hairstyles. It seems like every time she’s snapped in public, she has a different cut and colour; we just can’t keep up! This weekend however, she was channelling a look we thought we’d left well behind in our youth – multiple, twisted 90s buns!

Arriving at a New York recording studio in the early hours of Sunday morning, RiRi sported two little topknots, with the rest of her fire-red waves falling around her shoulders. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen her take hair-spiration from the 90s – remember that Gwen Stefani-esque hair at the iHeartRadio Awards in 2014…? (I mean, you look great Rihanna, but we’re not sure we’d look so fab – two top knots are certainly more wearable than 20!)

But is Rihanna onto something here? Is this 90s hairstyle, dare we say it, an emerging hair trend? Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall recently posted a pic on her Instagram alongside hairdresser Aaron Carlo, showing off her own topknots – ‘Minnie Mouse’ hair, as she coined it. With tousled hair and textured buns, we thought Jade looked super cute, and with almost 66,000 likes, we certainly weren’t the only ones who thought so.

Speaking of the 90s, remember which other infamous hair trend it gave us? Loved by girls up and down the land, the mighty crimper won fans in Lizzie McGuire (aka Hilary Duff) and Britney Spears – of course it was going to become popular. And, we’re pleased to say, it was once again spotted on the SS15 catwalks, notably at Stella McCartney and Emanuel Ungaro.

So ladies, if the crimpers can make it back into our beauty repertoire, then perhaps we should reconsider 90s mini buns. In fact, we’ve got the perfect occasion for you – the festival season is approaching, after all…
