Think of a celebrity with good skin. Who comes to mind first? If Jessica Alba and Rosie Huntington Whitley are not at the top of your list then we want to know who is, because when it comes to a flawless complexion these girls have nailed it.
So, it’s no surprise that the two share the same facialist, and she goes by the name of Shani Darden. Referred to by her clients as a skin guru, Shani is Hollywood’s go-to aesthetician and boasts a seriously impressive list of face-followers including Chrissy Teigen, Shay Mitchell and Amanda Seyfried.
The reason her clients keep coming back? Each and every skincare approach is carefully crafted for the individuals needs, and with raving reviews it’s clear she produces results unmatched by other facialists. As well as lots of water and sleep, Rosie swears by facials to maintain her supermodel skin and visits Darden every two to three weeks, while Jessica Alba sees her every six months to keep her skin glowing.
Recommended by Rosie, Suki now swears by Shani’s skin saving facials when she’s in LA, as does Pretty Little Liars Star Say Mitchell. All of her clients are devotees of her Resurfacing Retinol Reform Cream – a little bottle of magic that banishes dark circles, fine lines and acne scars, which Shani created herself. “It isn’t a peel, but it unclogs your pores. Every single time I use it the night before, I get compliments the entire next day on my skin,” says Chrissy.
So for those of us who can’t get an appointment, what is Shani’s number one skincare rule?: “Wear sunscreen every day,” says Shani. “UV Rays cause your skin to age and can cause cancer all year round. I recommend a daily SPF 30 sunscreen. A lot of light bulbs do emit UV rays, which is why it’s always important to be protected.”
And her other tips for achieving complexion perfection? Knowing your skin type.”The best way to keep your skin clear and glowing is to make sure you are using the right products for your skin type.” She stresses the importance of choosing the right products for your complexion. “When choosing a mousturiser for oily skin make sure it’s a moisturiser that wont clog your pores.”
Exfoliation is also key if you want radiant, even skin, but don’t over do it! “Exfoliating is useful in maintaining skin health, it removes dead skin and allows for penetration of moisturizers,” says Darden on Jessica Alba’s Honest Blog. She recommends using a face scrub only once or twice a week, depending on your skin type. “Be gentle, scrubbing is not ideal for everyone.”
Your diet also plays a huge role in your skin, and Shani is a firm believer of what you put into your body is what comes out on your skin. “It’s important to stay away from processed foods. Eating clean can make such a difference in how your skin looks.” If you have problem skin, it’s a good idea to look at triggers in your diet. “Dairy can cause cystic acne for many people,” she said. “If you are having a problem with acne take it out of your diet for two weeks and see if your skins starts to clear up.” The same goes for anti ageing, incorporate certain foods into your diet that will aid the anti ageing products you use. “Foods like brightly coloured fruits and veg contain antioxidants which help reduce free radical damage associated with ageing.”
Finally, you are never to young to start using anti-ageing products, the younger the better! Shani suggests adopting an anti-ageing skincare routine in your early 20s. A preventative approach works far better than waiting till the damage is done.
