It seems like everyone in the land of celebrity is going under the needle and plumping up their pout with lip fillers right now. And although a trip to the cosmetic surgeon’s office on your lunch break might seem like an attractive idea, there’s definitely things you should know before even considering going under the needle.
So, in order to give you all the info you need, we spoke to UK Leading Cosmetic Doctor Dr Tijion Esho who’s clients include Vicky Pattinson, Charlotte Crosby and Katie Piper to get the low down of what’s reeeally involved.
What Actually Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are basically collagen or hyaluronic acid – which is injected into the lip area with a needle to increase volume and size.
How Much Filler Do You Need?
People don’t always realise that to get the lip augmentation that you want, it can take time and won’t happen overnight. If you have very thin lips, you’ll need a few sessions – which will therefore be more expensive, too.
How Much Does It Cost?
Lip fillers can range from £250 – £500 per ml of filler injected. Most people start with 1ml, but if you have thin lips you may want more
Does It Hurt?
It totally depends on the practitioner carrying out the procedure; so it would be a good idea to have a really honest chat with them beforehand to ask what numbing treatments they offer. Personally, I choose to use a dental block so my patients don’t feel a thing. But many people rely on numbing gel, which can still cause discomfort.
Are The Results Instant?
Immediately after the procedure, your lips will be slightly swollen. After around 24 hours the swelling will have settled and you’ll be able to see the final result. I advise all my patients to take arnica tablets to prevent bruising.
How Long Do They Last?
Most people need top ups to maintain their look every 4-6 months, but it depends person to person
Are Lip Fillers Safe?
If done correctly, and carried out by a reputable practitioner then yes – lip fillers are perfectly safe. But it’s so important to do your research before hand.
What’s The Chances Of Lip Fillers Going Wrong?
It varies with what substance is used and again, finding the right doctor is so important. There can be between a 1-3% allergic reaction with collagen fillers, but it’s extremely rare when hyaluronic acid is used.
Can You Get Lip Fillers Reversed?
Hyaluronic acid lip fillers can be dissolved using a an enzyme called hyaluronidase – so if errors do occur, this is an option that’s available
What’s The Best Way Of Finding A Reputable Doctor?
Research is key and finding a medically qualified injector is absolutely essential. Check qualifications. NHS England recommends injectables should only be carried out by either a surgeon, doctor, dentist or nurse. Review websites such as the Good Surgeon Guide and always ask LOTS of questions!
