If you’re one of those people who likes to put off going to the loo as long as possible, you might want to stop that after reading this.
It’s a common problem – you’re bursting, but you’re either in the middle of a meeting/on the bus/involved in a REALLY exciting gossip session, and it’s just too impractical to go. It can wait, right?
Well, according to a new survey, holding in your pee can actually cause you serious problems.
‘The bladder’s kind of like a pond,’ Gerald Timm, a urological researcher at the University of Minnesota, has told Popular Science. ‘Not draining properly allows bacteria to build up, and that leads to infection.’
This means that if you’re the kind to let your bladder fill up until it’s about to burst, then you could be putting yourself at risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), cystitis, and urinary retention, a condition which means that your bladder can’t fully empty properly. Eesh!
In the very worst cases, this can lead to your bladder bursting (WE KNOW), which, although highly unlikely, is still possible if you have underlying bladder conditions.
And the horror story continues. Because after your bladder bursts, urine will pour into your abdomen, meaning you will have to get yourself to hospital, ASAP.
We’re sorry. But we just thought you needed to know.
So do your bladder a favour, and listen to it when it cries out to you, okay?
