Five Expert Tips To Nailing a Red Carpet Mani

Nail guru and L’Oreal Paris’ Global Nail Expert Tom Bachik is the man that Beyonce, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Heidi Klum all have on speed dial for when they need perfectly polished, red-carpet worthy nails. With one of the summer’s hottest events, The Cannes Film Festival just around the corner, we asked him his top five tips for getting party-perfect nails.

1. The Quick-Dry Trick

Tom’s golden rule for prepping your nails for a big event is not to rush! This may sound obvious, but Tom explains, “topcoats are quick-dry formulas, so if you apply them before the solvants have evaporated from the polish underneath it will take up to 30 minutes for your mani to become genuinely dent-proof.” Instead wait a few minutes until each layer is completely dry before you apply your next.

2. Say Goodbye To Chipping

Tom says that having dry nails can cause your polish to chip. Combat this by applying a cuticle oil, such as Jessica Phenomen Oil, £9.25 everyday. The oil penetrates the polish, preventing it from drying out and becoming prone to chipping. You’ll be amazed by how much longer your polish lasts!

3. The Suits-All Pedi Shade

Tom suggests wearing a neutral metallic on your toes, we love Nails Inc Foil Effect Polish in Kings Road, £15. He says that these colours are great because “they don’t detract from the shoe or outfit, but they do add a hint of sparkle. If there’s one colour running through the whole gown, I sometimes add a pop of colour on toes to tie the whole look together”.

4. Summer’s Must Have Shades

What screams Hollywood Glamour more than a bright red mani? At last years Cannes Film Festival Tom says that red nails were very popular, “they really flatter sunkissed skin”.  He suggests trying a range of colours, from blue-based tones like L’Oreal Paris Color Riche Nail Polish in Mythic Carpet, £4.99 to fiery oranges such as Models Own Hyper Gel Effect Nail Polish in Watermelon, £4.99 to find what suits you best.

5. Picture perfect talons!

Tom reveals that he once used the butterfly motifs that were on a set of Anne Hathaway’s false eyelashes as a last minute press-on nail stencil! This super pretty trick is really easy to do – paint you nails white, then carefully cut the motif off a set of false eyelashes and press it onto your nails, fix with a top-coat and you’re ready to impress! Try using the stars on Shu Uemura’s Mini Stars Lashes, £16 or the net effect on In Your Dreams Your Mesmerising Lashes, £20.
