If you don’t use it already, you need coconut oil in your beauty cupboard! Taken from the flesh of a coconut, this super useful multi-tasker can be used to clean, moisturise and hydrate your skin. It also works wonders on your hair and nails.
Coconut oil is also a secret wonder product for weight loss! Yes, not only does the natural nutty stuff help improve everything aesthetically, it can also help shift stubborn pounds. Can we marry our pot yet?
Here’s how to use delicious coconut oil to ditch that post-holiday muffin top…
Cook with it
Swap your frying oils and extra virgin for a healthy dollop coconut oil! It tastes especially great used when cooking yummy brownies… Diet ones, obviously.
Just a spoonful…
Of coconut oil makes the thigh fat dissolve! Got quite a ring to it, eh? Coconut oil will help to curb your appetite so scoff one spoonful in the morning. If you *really* love it, up your intake to two or three but no more. It isn’t calorie-free, you know.
Slip a spoonful into your fave cup of hot herbal tea to enjoy the benefits without having to eat it. Some people find downing a solid spoon a bit yukky, this is an easier way to include it in your brand new diet.
Now you’re knee deep in health knowledge about our fave nut oil, here are our top five beauty uses of this all-natural superstar…
We admit this sounds a little odd – the idea smearing oil all over your face goes against all we thought we knew about skincare! But coconut oil is actually an incredible make-up remover and cleanser.
It’s great to use if you have sensitive or dry skin because it’s intensively moisturising and completely natural, so won’t irritate your skin. Equally the fact that it’s packed with antioxidants means that coconut oil is also fab to use on oily skin because it can help to detox it, preventing blemishes.
Simply warm the oil in your hands, then massage it into your face and remove with cotton wool pads and warm water. Try using Balm Balm’s 100% Organic Coconut Cleanser, £13.25.
A Hair Mask
Celebs such as Kourtney Kardashian and Jamie Chung, who both have enviably luscious locks, swear by using coconut oil as a hair mask. Thanks to its incrediblely hydrating properties, slathering coconut oil onto your hair helps to fright frizz and keeps hair tangle free.
We’re big fans of Boots Coconut and Almond Intensive Hair Mask, £1.99. Try layering it onto the bottom lengths of your hair, leave for twenty minutes and then wash your hair as usual. You won’t believe how soft and shiny it is!
A Cuticle Treatment
Rubbing coconut oil on your cuticles will fix even the flakiest of nails. It will keep them moisturized and prevent them from peeling or cracking. Protecting your cuticles means that your entire nail will be healthier, helping them to grow longer and stronger.
Try using Dr Organics Virgin Coconut Oil Hand and Nail Cream, £6.29 to nourish your hands and nails in one.
A Lip Balm
We’re obsessed with Hurraw’s all-natural lip balms, and the Coconut Lip Balm, £3.99 is particularly lovely. It’s super soft and creamy and glides onto your lips without being sticky or feeling overly heavy. The blend of coconut and almond oils leave your lips hydrated for hours, it also smells ah-mazing!
As a treat for our lips, we like to mix a spoonful of warmed coconut oil with a pinch or two of brown sugar, making a homemade scrub – just rub it onto your lips and rinse with warm water for smooth, soft lips.
A Teeth whitener
Amazingly, coconut oil can help to whiten your teeth. You may have heard that celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow are going crazy for a technique called ‘oil pulling’. This involves swishing coconut oil around your mouth for ten to twenty minutes and then spitting it out to help pull out toxins from around your teeth, gums and tongue.
Try using Vita Coco’s Coconut Oil, £9.99. It’s also incredibly healthy and nutritious to eat and to cook with – we love adding it to our morning smoothies!
