Known for her quirky and eccentric collections, Betsey Johnson didn’t disappoint at her SS16 show during New York Fashion Week. Celebrating her 50th year in the fashion industry, the designer showed off an eclectic array of 60s shifts, 70s ensembles and 80s prom dresses in all colours of the rainbow. Yep, this was truly a tour of the decades, with some seriously striking hair and make up looks that were the talk of the show.
With make up legends Kryolan responsible for the elaborate looks, Betsey’s 60s girls had graphic, heavily drawn eyes and metallic lips, paired with voluminous hair swept-up into classic 60s bouffants. The key here was the eyelashes; the models wore individual extensions on their bottom lashes, invoking the spirit of legendary 60s supermodel Twiggy.
There was also a distinct 70s spirit in the rainbow shades that covered some of the girls’ eyes; block colours were swept upwards, even covering the eyebrows completely. Hair was crimped, while Morgan Taylor was responsible for the hippy floral designs adorning nails.
The 80s was perhaps the crowning glory of the show; prom princesses dressed in vibrant tutu skirts and full-skirted frocks in pinks, shimmering silver and yellow ruffles were worn with stacked platforms, leopard print boots and coloured tights, with hair styled into glamorous, tumbling curls. There was, of course, a healthy sprinkle of glitter on the models’ cheeks, with an emphasis on kohl eyes with deep purple eye shadow.
Following the finale march, the designer herself took to the catwalk, receiving a bunch of roses before cartwheeling into the splits, much to the delight of the FROW. Betsey Johnson may be 72 (yes, really) but she proved she’s still got as much boundless energy as ever before.
