Dungarees: The LOOK Edit

Attention all 90s fashion fans – dungarees are back, and as it happens, the high street are chock-full of them too.

Everyone from Alexa Chung, Atlanta de Cadenet Taylor, Suki Waterhouse, Kiera Knightley and Pixie Lott to some of the world’s hottest street stylers have been wearing theirs, while the SS16 catwalks saw many a dungaree walk the runway. (FROW-siders including Natalie Joos and Leandra Medina were spotted in theirs too).  But while this childhood staple once came with connotations of playground rough and tumble, tomboys and hand-me-downs, now it has been resurrected into more variations than we can keep count of, along with the seal of approval from everyone in the sartorial know. Better still, they’re just as comfortable as they were back in the day – yippee!

So where shall we begin? There’s both long and short adult incarnations of our classic denim dungas, feminine full-length floral versions for laidback summer cool and pinstripe linen numbers to solve all your festive fashion woes. For the more formal of affairs, there’s simple black numbers complete with crisp crepe fabric for an extra dose of after-hours glam. Last but not least, there’s khaki and patchwork versions that tap into both the 90s and utilitarian trends.

As for styling, these beauties can be dressed up or down for day or night. To help you on your way, here’s a few benchmarks to stick to:

1.     Go for muted colours – bright block hues can leave you looking more creche than couture (sorry!).

2.     Dress up culotte dungarees with a sleek white shirt and courts for the ultimate work-to-play look.

3.     Never squeeze into a size too small (even if they’re the last pair). The all-in-one fit will rise up and create a sight for sore eyes.

So there you have it, dungarees really are the way forward ladies. Happy shopping…
