Reese Witherspoon has admitted she’s “deeply embarrassed” about her arrest on Friday night. The Oscar-winning actress and her husband Jim Toth were pulled over by police in Atlanta and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and disorderly conduct. Reese has now apologised.
She said in a statement: “I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse.
“I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I’m very sorry for my behaviour.”
Police pulled the pair over when they spotted Jim driving erratically and unable to stay in his lane. Reese was told to remain in the car while her husband Jim, a Hollywood agent, was questioned and tested about his alcohol intake, but she refused.
According to reports, the actress said to the policeman: “Do you know my name? You’re about to find out who I am. You’re about to be on national news.”
In her mugshot, Reese appears to be crying with her head held down. Jim now faces DUI charges.
Last night she returned to the red carpet for the premiere of Mud in New York with Matthew McConaughey, but did not give any interviews. However, when Matthew – who is represented by Jim – was asked about the arrest of his co-star, he said: “I’m not going to comment on that because it’s too fresh.”
We’ll bring you more news as we hear it…
