After fans noticed similarities between Shout Out To My Ex and G.R.L.'s Ugly Heart, the ladies speak out in defence of their #1 hit...
The Little Mix girls have responded to comparisons between their #1 hit Shout Out To My Ex and G.R.L.’s Ugly Heart.
Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall were accused of ‘copying’ the band’s 2014 track after they debuted their latest single on The X Factor earlier this month.
On Twitter, messages popped up such as: ‘Shoutout to my ex kinda sounds like ugly heart by GRL,’ and: ‘On my first listen of Shout Out To My Ex. Um…it’s Ugly Heart? It’s exactly the same [sic].’
Even G.R.L. responded to the speculation, simply Tweeting on their official account: ‘#ShoutOutToUglyHeart.’
Oosh. Just a teeny bit of shade there…
Others have stuck up for LM, with one writing: ‘Just like with CFTS & Jessie J’s Domino, SOTME & Ugly Heart have the same chord progression that thousands of pop songs have. Means nothing.’
Another said: ‘Well, that’s kinda true that sotme sounds like ugly heart, but perfect sounds like style and no one had a problem with that?’
Now Little Mix themselves have spoken out, with Jade telling a Belgium radio station: ‘We’re actually friends with Emmalyn from G.R.L. and she loves the song.
‘Every song is going to have a similar chord sequence, slightly similar lyrics and melodies. It happens all the time. It doesn’t mean that they’re not both incredible songs.
‘I think maybe because it was a girl band as well. I just think people like to have something negative to say.’
Leigh-Anne added that G.R.L.’s song sounds ‘a lot more country’ than their own.
However, Perrie and Jesy were a little less friendly. Pezza said: ‘I just think, stop trying to hop on the bandwagon,’ before Jesy swiped: ‘Stop trying to get publicity!’
Crikey. Let’s hope this lot don’t end up in the same room together anytime soon…
