The 22-year-old is getting ready to make some new music - but not *everyone* is entirely thrilled...
Liam Payne broke a lot of hearts last night.
The 22-year-old took to Twitter and Instagram to reveal that he’s landed a solo deal, captioning a photo of an LP bearing his name: ‘Very happy to have signed to my new record label Capitol Records.
‘They have such an amazing history of artists, I hope I can follow in their footsteps. One direction will always be my home and family but I’m very excited to see what this chapter brings [sic].’
Pretty exciting, huh?! We’re not exactly surprised that he’s decided to make his own music. His ex-bandmate Zayn Malik has had tonnes of success doing the same thing, and Liam is a hugely talented singer.
Forgotten what he sounds like without 1D by his side? Remind yourself with this video of his 2010 X Factor audition…
Yep, that’s him performing in front of his now-girlfriend Cheryl. Cute.
Of course, plenty of people are thrilled for Liam. One fan responded: ‘You really freaking deserve this, Liam. I’m glad all of you are branching out on your own and figuring yourselves out a bit. It’s good to spread those wings.’
Another wrote: ‘I’m so proud of how far u guys have come [sic].’

However, it hasn’t gone down particularly well with some Directioners. And when we say some, we, er, mean A LOT. In fact, the hashtag #OneDirectionIsOverParty has been trending on Twitter ever since the announcement.
And while a party sounds fun, it definitely isn’t. Basically, Directioners are worried that 1D’s hiatus will now turn into a full-on split.
There are over 600,000 Tweets, including: ‘This is no party. this is a funeral,’ and: ‘Ok I’m gonna need at least one of the boys to calm us down by saying that they’re coming back and clearing this mess [sic].’
Hmm. Whatever the case, we’re sure hearing Liam singing again will help make them feel a teeny bit better.
