Fans were convinced the 23-year-old had confirmed Cheryl's reported 'pregnancy', but that wasn't the case at all...
Liam Payne managed to send fans into a total Twitter frenzy yesterday.
Excitingly, followers became convinced that the 23-year-old had confirmed his girlfriend Cheryl’s ‘pregnancy’ after the hashtag #CongratsLiam started trending.
But as it turns out, it was about something entirely different. Oh.
It all started when Liam Tweeted about his blossoming solo career.
He wrote: ‘Amazing to have signed to @RepublicRecords I am celebrating as I tweet thank you so much for accepting me to your roster of amazing artists.’
Of course, Directioners were keen to send Liam their best wishes.
One wrote: ‘We are so proud and happy for you! We are so excited for your music, we love you!’ while another said: ‘Congrats Liam, can’t wait to see what the future holds for your music!!’
And this is where the hashtag stemmed from. All starting to make sense, right?
Of course, when people logged onto Twitter and saw the trending topic before they’d checked Liam’s page, they immediately got the wrong idea.
Messages included: ‘Who thought this was a baby announcement #congratsliam,’ ‘#congratsliam I had a little heart attack because i thought this hashtag confirm that Liam will be a dad ?,’ and: ‘I saw #congratsliam trending and I almost choked bc I thought it had to do with him and cheryl [sic].’
Ah, wishful thinking. So where did this speculation about Cheryl, 33, stem from?
Well, fans first noticed that Chez had been absent from social media for quite a while. Then Liam allegedly asked One Direction pal and new dad Louis Tomlinson for parenting advice.
Cheryl’s mum was even spotted buying a pregnancy pillow in Mothercare. Hmmm.
We guess we’ll just have to wait and see if they ever speak out about the rumours. But in the meantime, congratulations Liam!
