Pioneered by US sleep expert Dr Andrew Weil, this technique works by allowing the lungs to become fully filled with air, which allows more oxygen into the body and makes you super relaxed.

‘This comes from yoga and in yoga breathing you have to keep the tip of the tongue behind the upper front teeth,’ Weil says.

‘You breathe in through your nose quietly and blow air out forcefully through your mouth making a whoosh sound. It takes all of about 30 seconds so there is no excuse for not doing it.

‘It produces a very pleasant altered state of consciousness’, he adds. ‘You may not get that the first time you do it but it’s one of the benefits of practicing.’

All you need to do is hold your breath for four seconds, breathe out part of the way and hold for seven, and then exhale completely for a count of eight. Then, repeat between two and four times.

Getting a solid night’s sleep every night not only prevents weight gain, heart disease and diabetes, but it’s also proven to help you live longer. That’s alot of incentives right there.
