Gigi Hadid Has Issued A Statement After That AMAs Controversy

After causing an online debate, Gigi Hadid has shared how she feels about the 'racist' accusations against her.

Imagine hosting an entire awards ceremony in front of multiple A-listers and probably also everyone you’ve ever known, ever.

Yup, enough to bring ANYONE out in the cold sweats- right?!

And so, as she made her presenting debut, we thought supermodel Gigi Hadid did a stand up job of hosting the American Music Awards.

However, there has been quite a bit of controversy surrounding Gigi’s first hosting job- as the supermodel has in fact been accused of making a ‘racist’ joke.

During the show, Gigi did a sketch which involved her impersonating the future First Lady, Melania Trump.

The sketch saw Gigi put on an Eastern European accent, as she poked fun at the accusations of Melania plagiarising Michelle Obama’s speech.

Turning to the audience with a Melania-esque pout, Gigi said ‘I love my husband, President Barack Obama. And our children Sasha and Malia’.

Many took to social media to slam Gigi for ‘bullying’ Melania, whilst others jumped to her defense and found the whole thing pretty funny.

Now, the 21-year-old has taken to her Twitter account to issue an apology for any offence caused by the sketch.

Via a handwritten open letter, Gigi writes ‘I was honoured to host the AMA’s last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business’.

‘I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humour and with no bad intent’.

Gigi then shared, ‘I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologise to anyone that I offended. And have only the best wishes for our country’.

Gigi’s AMA co-host, Jay Pharaoh, has also taken to Instagram to defend the sketch via a lengthy statement.

In a post captioned, ‘I ain’t gonna say no more about this, but I’m placing this right here, LEAVE @gigihadid ALONE’, Jay shares his thoughts on the matter.
