Fifty Shades Of Grey‘s hunky frontman Charlie Hunnam has quit his role as the film’s smouldering S&M lead.
The Sons Of Anarchy actor, who was set to play Christian Grey in the steamy rompfest, made a shock exit this weekend after announcing work commitments were getting in the way of his preparation for the role.
“Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey,” read a statement released by Universal, confirming Charlie was pulling out as ranchy lead character Christian.
The 33-year-old recently admitted he wasn’t as rough and ready to play the sexy CEO as originally thought, opening up about his 50 Shades insecurities to Entertainment Weekly, which is thought to have been part of the reason for his decision.
“Charlie got cold feet,” an insider revealed.
“He wanted to get out of the movie because he was feeling like it would be his version of Showgirls and he didn’t want to be remembered for that.
“Nor is Charlie ready for the celebrity he would receive if the movie worked out. Add that with the studio execs being highly disappointed by the reaction to the casting, they wanted to start over with a clean slate.”
Whether it was a case of nerves or a clash of filming we’ve got to say we may have shed a little tear when we found out the Geordie beefcake wouldn’t be stripping off for our viewing pleasure, although we’re now going to dedicate our time to finding a hot new man to play 50 Shades‘ poster boy.
It’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it…
