Angelina Jolie has lost her aunt to breast cancer, less than two weeks after the Hollywood actress revealed that she had undergone a double mastectomy to avoid the same disease.
Debbie Martin, the younger sister of Angie’s mother Marcheline who died of ovarian cancer in 2007, passed away at the Palomar Medical Centre in Escondido on Sunday, aged 61. Her husband Ron told E! news: “Angelina has been in touch throughout the week and her brother Jamie has been with us, giving his support day by day. They both loved Debbie very much and although Angie is not able to come right now, she has sent her love and support, which was very nice.”
Jolie’s uncle also praised his niece’s brave decision to have pre-emptive surgery, telling the Associated Press: “Had we known, we certainly would have done exactly what Angelina did.”
Explaining her life-changing choice earlier this month, the actress and mum-of-six wrote in the New York Times: “I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as much I could”, resulting in her likelihood of developing breast cancer reducing to a mere 5%.
While this must be a deeply sad time for Angelina and her family, we imagine it will only re-confirm that the 37-year-old’s brave decision to have the procedure was absolutely the right one for her. Our thoughts are with you, Ange.
