Do you need a new job or a new career?

  • A job change is a leap but a career change is parkour
  • Unsure how you feel? There are questions you can ask yourself to find out
  • Millennials will have 15 to 20 jobs in their lifetime, so don’t get stuck in a rut!

Are you feeling frustrated at work? It could be time to change and move to a new company. But if the thought of doing the same work in a new team fills you with either boredom or dread, then perhaps you need a career change. Here we are discussing what you should do.

The root of the problem

What’s causing you the most pain right now? It is your colleagues, your boss, your office environment, your company culture, your salary, or the actual work itself?

If it’s your commute that’s getting you down, or not liking your boss, or feeling isolated in your office, then a new job in the same industry might be the thing you need. However if you sit down and cannot muster any energy to get started on any task, putting all the other factors aside, then you should think about changing careers. Thinking about the root of the problem can be so revealing.

Your plan

What do you want to be doing in five years time? If the answer is “please not this!” then you need to get a plan together. There will always be downsides to any job. Doctors don’t like working all hours of the day for example, but if they are passionate about their work then they will do it. Interns may not like the b*tch work, but if they feel they are learning and progressing then they will stick with it and work their way up.

Can you see a path in the job you’re in? A new role that might come your way or something to work towards? If you don’t you should think about changing jobs. All jobs need to offer you a chance to progress and a clear journey for you to take.

If you can see a path but you don’t have any enthusiasm for progressing in your industry then you’re in the wrong one. If you’re not excited about the path in front of you you need to change industries pronto.
