When you’re young, it feels like you’re going to live forever. But it also feels like time is moving quicker than ever – there has to be a name for this phenomenon, right? The youth-time paradox? That’s what we’re calling it from now on, tell your friends.
Either way, one day you won’t be fresh-faced and energetic, you’ll be old and grumpy and your back will always hurt. That’s why it’s important to have a pension. The only thing worse than being old and not understanding modern music is being broke and not understanding modern music.
Here are five reasons why you should start thinking about your pension even if you think you’re going to live forever (spoiler: you won’t).
1. We could live to 100
As healthcare improves and retirement ages push back, this generation could potentially live to a century and keep working until they’re 75+. Those older years will require far more financial backing so to save yourself trouble later, it’s best to start saving now to be one of those inspirational old people, not the depressing ones.
2. Save now and relax later
In the years approaching retirement, many people wish that they’d started saving previously. Even if it’s the smallest amount, having a little nest-egg for Future-You can put everything in a better perspective.
3. You might have to make an emergency withdrawal
To that end, even though the pension is technically for retirement, there may come a time when you need to dig into it to save your skin. We’d advise against touching it, but if it’s a life or death situation – it’s your money at the end of the day.
4. You have options
When you move up the ladder and start working for a super professional company you’ll most likely be auto-enrolled into a pension scheme. You can opt out and continue your personal savings but having already started your pension, you’ll have a better idea of the pros and cons of each scheme.

5. Noone has the same job for life anymore
Back in times of yore, you’d graduate from university and sometimes work in the same field for 50 years. Those days are over. No one continues down the same career path anymore. Some jobs will be more secure than others throughout your life – some might not even offer a pension scheme. That’s why it’s so crucial to get started on your future livelihood ASAP; you never know what’s going to happen.
