We are in awe of Tao Porchon-Lynch, 98-year-old yoga master. One of the true unsung heroes that has seen it all, done it all and continues to share her talents and wisdom with a world that doesn’t deserve them.
Having committed herself to yoga since 1982 and growing up in India, Tao has probably seen every form of the practice and therefore knows the best ways to make the most of it.
The Independent peg Tao as something of a ‘yogalebrity’ in stark contrast to the California based young-uns that dominate our Instagram feeds. Another huge difference is while these lycra health pundits are busy stretching over their infinity pools, Tao is reveals her secrets that led to being an active 98-year-old are just wine and tea.
Porchon-Lynch drinks exclusively tea and wine. Her dedication to the stuff led her to found the American Wine Society with her late husband in 1967. The death of her husband 16 years later led her to the study of yoga which she now teaches around the world.
Since her birth in 1918, she tells the New York Times, Porchon-Lynch moved from India to London then onwards to Hollywood. Over that time she hung out with Marilyn Monroe, the Dalai Lama and Mahatma Gandhi. Not a bad life at all!
The yoga guru rose to public attention in 2012 after a photographer shot pictures of her in Central Park and posted them online. They fluttered through the viral-sphere and she became a social media sensation.
When Tao isn’t globetrotting, necking the best wine available and teaching the arts, the 98-year-old can be found dancing competitively with partners up to 75 years her junior.
When she appeared on America’s Got Talent, she was described as “to mind-blowing for words”.
Even without the viral fame, Tao will always be an inspiration to us and one of those people that we’ll always want to share a glass of wine or three with!
