There are very few jobs more stressful than being a teacher. Regardless of the long summer holidays, the future of the youth is in your hands and you’ll be held responsible for the failings of intolerable children. The good news is that educators are the best source for quick cures to feeling the stress of life.
During one of the first classes of the school year, a high school teacher in California shared his tips for keeping cool under pressure which, as all things both interesting and boring tend to, ended up on Twitter courtesy of one of Brett Phillips’ pupils.
For those without coke bottles for lenses, the list is 101 points long with some of the favourites highlighted. Speaking to Buzzfeed, the student, Alina, said of Mr.Phillips: “he knows how stressed we are with school, sports, work and life in general, so he gave us the paper to help and just to have in case we are stressed”. Someone give this guy a ‘best teacher’ mug or something!
The tweet has been retweeted 23,000 times at time of writing meaning that Mr Phillips’ influence is spreading further than the 30 pupils he originally intended to help, how cool!
So what motivated this humble psychology teacher to go the extra mile for his students? “I do the things on the list to enjoy life more myself”, he said, adding, “Life’s short – too much stress will make it even shorter”.
Here are some of favourite cures to stress from the list:
- Avoid relying on chemical aids (any coffee addicts out there?)
- Don’t rely on your memory… write it down
- Say ‘no’ more often
- Avoid negative people
- Repair anything that doesn’t work properly as soon as it breaks
- Always prepare for rain (this is good advice in the literal and figurative sense)
- Take the time to pet friendly dogs when you get the chance
We’re feeling the stress fade away already!
