Could tattoos really give you cancer?
A scary new warning about tattoos has emerged.
According to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), inks used on the skin could be potentially toxic, and could even be banned.
The report found that some of the inks used could trigger numerous nasty side effects, from allergic reactions to painful itching and, scariest of all, even an increased risk of cancer.
‘Many reports show concerns for public health stemming from the composition of inks used for tattooing’, the agency said.
‘The most severe concerns are allergies caused by the substances in the inks and possible carcinogenic, mutagenic or reproductive toxic effects’.
It was also found that red tattoos are the most dangerous of these inks – bad news for celebrities like Kylie Jenner and Cheryl, who both famously have red inkings.
Rick Stevens, President of the Tattoo and Piercing Industry Union in the UK, has added that a surge of cheap Chinese tattoos isn’t helping with quality control.
‘There is no system for checking what is in these inks’, he said. Scary stuff.
