Wedding season is upon us, cue the mega wedding guest outfit dramas, tears and mammoth shopping trips. Before we get sucked down into the fashion blues, we caught up with style maverick Gok Wan to get his easy peasy tips on ensuring you nail your wedding guest outfit – phew!
Gok’s first wedding-dressing tip? “Take it down a notch”.
“It’s almost like Christmas parties, we’ve got this big fear that you’re in front of an audience, you walk into a room and you don’t know most of them, and you’re in front of everyone and they’re all looking at you and you’re pretty self conscious, so what we tend to do is turn up the fashion heat and we kind of go for it, we start wearing baubles as earrings, necklaces, earrings, bracelets, tiaras… literally everything going on with our accessories.
“Then fashion prints, fashion colours, we go for fur, we go for leather and before you know it, we’ve got every single trend from every single decade and all at the same time. So like I said, just pare it down and just think to yourself; would I ever be photographed in this outfit? It’s a really good dress-o-meter.”
“Another quick tip is to keep the hair and make-up simple because it’s not about you, it’s about the bride. That’s a pet hate of mine, when you got a wedding and the birds have got these massive eyelash extensions and the hair and the nails and everything else done I just think to myself, oh good Lord what are you doing? It’s not about you. You are merely accessories to the day.”
And finally: “You’ve got to be comfortable. You’ve got to consider sitting down, standing up, crouching, slut dropping… whatever else you do at a wedding”.
