Pastels have long been a summer style staple, but this autumn, sugary hues have transcended the seasons to become an autumn/winter wardrobe must-have too. And we’ve got to say, they make a nice change from autumn’s usual muted colour palette. Pastel shades stormed countless AW14 catwalks, including heavyweights Gucci, Chanel, Christian Dior and Ralph Lauren. With such major high-fashion backing, it was a no-brainer that the trend would trickle down to the high street quick sharp, and Matalan is totally leading the pack.
Just like the catwalks, Matalan’s pastel offerings come in almost every form, from pretty frocks and work-to-weekend separates to statement coats and cosy knitwear. The co-ord is another look that’s going nowhere for autumn, so this floral top and skirt will score double trend points. Wear it solo while the weather is still warm, then try it with a white shirt or fine-knit polo neck on cooler days. We’re loving a chic co-ord dressed down with skate shoes right now too.
Not convinced about making pastel colours work past summer? It’s all about what you wear them with. Black and grey are great for adding an autumnal vibe and toughening up a girlie hue – case in point this jumper and skirt combo. Polished accessories like structured bags and chic heels in classic black are a must.
The pink coat has proved itself to be a buy with serious staying power, and we can’t get enough of this cocoon offering, which feels like a fresh update on last year’s styles. A collarless shape and textured finish take the trend-ticking factor off the scale – to add glamour try wearing a statement necklace on top of your buttoned up coat.
Of course, an autumn wardrobe is nothing without a plush jumper, and we love this pale blue ribbed number. Perfect for teaming with everything from jeans to tailored trousers, it’ll look especially good contrasted with a glossy leather pencil skirt. Now, if that lovely lot hasn’t made you 100% pro autumn pastels, we don’t know what will!
