Joe Bates, one of the creative directors of the beloved Brit label Sibling, has passed away after ‘a long battle with cancer’, as reported by Love magazine on its social media accounts. Joe headed up the brand, renowned for its inventive and playful knitwear, along with Cozette McCreery and Sid Bryan. Launched in 2008, the designers initially focused on menswear before launching Sister by Sibling for women.
Always one of the London Fashion Week favourites, Sibling is the label responsible for some of the most innovative and engaging designs on the British catwalks, thanks to the co-founders’ relentless creativity. Joe recently designed the Spring 2016 Menswear collection, re-imagining traditional sportswear into something entirely more incredible thanks to a skilled use of sequins, beading and jacquard.
Love’s full tribute read: ‘RIP our gorgeous and beloved friend Joe Bates of SIBLING. He lost his long battle with cancer at the weekend. We will miss his sharp wit and talent hugely, his legacy will continue through the SIBLING label.’
Sibling has reached out to its fans to thank them for all their love and support via Instagram, as tributes have been made to the designer by hundreds of members of the fashion industry and beyond.
It’s the unexpected flourishes of a Sibling collection that continue to inspire and enthrall us all, and there’s no doubt that Joe will be sadly missed.
