Since his first Fashion Week appearance this February (FROW at Burberry, no less), it was only a matter of time before popstar Sam Smith made his mark on the fashion map. And, sure enough, yesterday afternoon the 22-year-old made his foray into fashion official with a teaser of his first campaign for none other than French fashion house Balenciaga.
Yep, Mr Smith has joined the designer’s impressive roster of campaign models (including Kate Moss and Lara Stone for the brand’s latest womenswear ad). Not bad for a first, right?
The singer took to Instagram to post two videos, giving a glimpse into the brand’s AW15 menswear campaign. He originally hyped his 4.2m followers up with the first caption, ‘Ladies & Gentlemen. The time has come for my first ever collaboration with a fashion house. You ready…’, with no mention of which brand would be the driving force.
Then, just one hour later, Sam confirmed the much-anticipated #BALXSAMSMITH campaign, stating: ‘So honoured and ecstatic to announce my collaboration with @balenciaga on the upcoming FW15 Menswear campaign!!!! #Balenciaga’.
Both videos are pretty shadowy, but there’s no denying Mr Smith looks every inch the handsome model, clad in a rather dapper tailored suit. No change there then..
Balenciaga was also quick to confirm the news, following up Sam’s posts with a Tweet of its own: ‘Sneak-peek of #BALENCIAGA FW15 Men’s Campaign Video featuring Sam Smith. @samsmithworld#samsmith#balxsamsmith’. Ooh, the excitement!
Meanwhile, Sam’s personal style has gone from strength to strength of late, so it’s no surprise that the brand was keen to snap him up. Speaking of his look previously, Sam said: ‘I want what I wear to be iconic. Not even what I wear, the way I hold myself. I don’t know, I like clean-cut things that are just iconic.’
