Kate Middleton and Prince William announced the arrival of their royal baby boy, who was welcomed into the world at St Mary's Hospital at 4:24pm, on Twitter yesterday, marking a huge break with royal tradition.
Announcing the royal baby news first via a formal press release by email, Kensington Palace then took to Twitter moments later to declare Kate and Will's exciting new arrival: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm. The baby weighs 8lb 6oz", Clarence House tweeted at 8:29pm.
Until then, it had been expected that the news would be broken via the traditional easel at Buckingham Palace, used when William was born 31 years ago. But from the looks of things, the Palace is getting all 21st-century on us. We like it!
“Use our hashtag #WelcometotheWorld to tell us about any other new arrivals today - we would love to hear from you! #RoyalBaby", they then posted. And boy, did the celebrity wellwishers flood in...
"Congratulations to William and Kate!! So happy they have a healthy baby and everyone is good. Can't wait to see him now #Royalbaby", an elated Cheryl Cole tweeted.
"A future King...a little baby boy. How exciting x", fellow mummy The Saturdays' Rochelle Humes posted. "It's a boy!!! Congratulations William and Kate!! X", tweeted Cara Delevingne.
And as for Millie Mackintosh, well, she wanted everyone to know she'd had her royal baby crystal ball polished up from the get-go. "I knew it was going to be a boy! #royalbaby", the Made In Chelsea star wrote.
Even US president Barack Obama hopped on board the royal baby congrats train. "We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings", the US president said of new parents Kate and Wills.
