The Pirelli Calendar Has A Serious Twist For 2016

While the Pirelli calendar is usually all about the sex (remember Gigi’s leather getup for 2015?), this year we knew it was going to be something a little different. For 2016, the famous calendar aimed to celebrate the featured women for their achievements, rather than it being all about the nudity. That’s not to say that some women didn’t get their kit off though.

Amy Schumer and Serena Williams are two of the ladies who posed in their pants for the stunning calendar shot by Annie Leibovitz, while the likes of Patti Smith and Yoko Ono made their Pirelli debut clothed.

The photographer was lucky enough to handpick the ladies that would appear in the calendar explaining, “I thought of the women I admired. I still can’t believe the women who agreed to do it.”

With a whole host of the world’s most well-respected ladies gracing the lens, we’re not surprised that Annie was in disbelief at such a fantastic line up. There was minimal retouching done to the imagery because, as she explained, “No-one was supposed to look like they had tried hard in these pictures.”

All shot to emphasize how strong and natural the women are, Amy Schumer confessed, “I felt I was more beautiful than I have ever felt in my life.” It was Annie’s idea to have Amy strip off in a funny take that she hadn’t received the memo about the calendar no longer being nude-centric.

“This calendar is so completely different. It is a departure. The idea was not to have any pretence in these pictures and be very straightforward,” Annie said of the inspiring calendar, adding, “We need more than twelve months…There isn’t a beginning and there isn’t an end.”
