Period leave sounds like some kind of distance fantasy, right? But actually, it might be just around the corner. 

Because according to reports, a Bristol-based internet company called Coesixt it attempting to create a ‘happier and healthier working environment’ for its mostly-female employees by letting them take time off during their time of the month.

Now this is welcome music to our ears.

‘As a manager of staff I have seen women really suffer with their periods and I have found them doubled over in a lot of pain’, Bex Baxter, one of the directors at Coexist, said.

Explaining that she’s tired of seeing women suffer in silence whilst attempting to work through the cramps, Bex added that she feels it’s time to break the taboo surrounding periods.

‘Nothing like this has been done in the UK before, we believe, and if it has, it has been very small’, she said. 

‘This is not about employees taking more time off but working more flexibly and efficiently around their menstrual cycle and encouraging a work-life balance.’

Arguing that letting people take time off for health reasons doesn’t necessarily lead to an unproductive business, Baxter added:

‘When women are having their periods they are in a winter state, when they need to regroup, keep warm and nourish their bodies. The spring section of the cycle, immediately after a period, is a time when women are actually three times as productive as usual.’
