Paris Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2010 Spectacular!
Despite the recession, the haute couture shows are still going strong and last week saw the latest display of the most expensive outfits in the world. While it must be said that Anna Wintour looked less than impressed at Jean Paul Gaultier (though who knows whether it was the clothes or if she was just in a bad mood), there were some jaw-dropping outfits clearly not designed for those who take public transport. At Chanel, silver and pastels were the order of the day, with Karl Lagerfeld declaring it his first ever collection without black or navy (mind you, if you were forking out £50,000 on a jacket you'd want to think you'd got something a bit special). Givenchy was a sea of ’70s-inspired black and nude (with splashes of midnight blue, lilac and emerald), demonstrating the incredible detailing that sets couture apart from your common or garden designer fashion – these are no ordinary ruffles. Dior was typically extravagant, with equestrianism a strong theme and swathes of taffeta befitting of ladies who only ride side-saddle. Dita Von Teese and Kylie Minogue were in the front-row – Dita ably demonstrating there is such a thing as too much leather, but then like Dior designer Galliano, she's not one to do things by halves. - ZA
