Thought wearing a dress over trousers was only for the brave and/or slightly insane? Naomie Harris just proved us all wrong with this flawless ensemble, which has made us completely re-consider every party outfit we've ever worn...
While we were sifting through 37274858 LBDs, last year’s glitter co-ord (an impulse purchase, granted) and a questionable jumpsuit, Naomie Harris was at the Gotham Independent Film Awards, slaying. And we don’t use that verb lightly. At least, not when it comes to our potential party outfit.
Harris was at the event with her fellow cast members from Moonlight, a film which scooped four awards during the ceremony and which has been tipped for Oscar recognition. It won’t be released in the UK until February, but safe to say it will be worth the wait.
Obviously, Naomie Harris has long been one of our favourite celebrities on the red carpet scene. Her expert mix of pieces from huge fashion houses and nascent brands is nothing short of inspiring. She’s been working with Hollywood power stylist Micaela Erlanger, who’s also responsible for the amazing outfits seen on the likes of Michelle Dockery and Lupita Nyong’o, but this most recent look is undoubtedly one of our all-time favourites.
Wearing a bandeau, sequin dress over black trousers with simple black courts, Naomie basically achieved everything we’ve been dreaming of for this year’s Christmas party. Firstly, who knew that one could look so effortless despite dripping in sequins? And secondly, when did dresses over trousers look this great?! Well, it does have a lot to with the fact that Naomie’s outfit comes courtesy of Monse, the NY-based brand which was only established a little over a year ago by designers Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, who worked together at Oscar de la Renta before launching their own label.
Monse has quickly earned high praise from the fashion industry- not to mention huge retail success around the world- and we’re pretty obsessed with the way in which Garcia and Kim create a powerful, undone sense of sexuality, always feeling entirely- and here’s that word again- effortless. The design duo were also appointed as the new creative directors at Oscar de la Renta, a brand they both know intimately, given their CV.
While we have to wait until February to see what the two designers have in store for ODR, we can continue obsessing over Naomie’s Monse SS17 look right now. Perhaps it’s the black band at the top of the dress that pulls the whole thing together? Maybe, let’s face it, it’s because Naomie would look incredible in a bin bag. We heard that was her second choice. Either way, all we do know is that this is actually a surprisingly simple combination that we can- and will- try immediately.
In case you’re so inspired by Naomie you feel the incredible urge to hit the shops in order to recreate this outfit right away, here are some handy options for you. We’re no longer fearing the festive season; oh no, we embrace it. Why? We’ve just found the dream party outfit.
