Mel B Reveals How The Spice Girls Got Their Nicknames

Have you ever wondered how the Spice Girls got their nicknames?

Well, in a new interview, Mel B has spilled about how the five famous ladies came to be dubbed Sporty, Posh, Scary, Baby and Ginger… And it turns out it was all down to a ‘lazy journalist’. LOL.

Mel told Huff Post Live: ‘It was actually a lazy journalist that couldn’t be bothered to remember all our names, so he just gave us nicknames, and we were like, “Oh, well, that kinda works. I don’t mind my name. Do you like your name? Baby? Posh?”

‘We were like, “Let’s just go with it,’” she said.

The journalist in question was Top Of The Pops’ Peter Loraine, who made up the nicknames for a feature story on the band back in 1996.

‘Posh was the first one to be thought up because Victoria looks pretty sophisticated’, he’s previously said. ‘The rest were pretty easy really because the girls’ characters were already really strong.

‘The names jumped out at us. We laughed the most when we came up with Scary. Jennifer Cawthron, who was also from Leeds, came up with that one because Mel B was so loud and had tried to take over our whole photo shoot.’

Well, you learn something new every day!

Earlier this year, a mini Spice Girls reunion happened that had us all feeling very nostalgic after Mel B posted an adorable picture of herself with Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton.

In the snap, Mel pulls an excited face as she cuddles up to her former bandmates. She captioned the cute shot: ‘Love my girls!! Friendship never ends it just gets stronger.’

So it seems all is well in Spice camp. Phew.

Spice Girls in the 1990s Will the Spice Girls every *properly* reunite?

It must’ve been a while since Mel last saw Geri and Emma.

She was the only Spice Girl who missed out on David Beckham’s 40th birthday celebrations last month. His wife Victoria had organised a lavish bash in Morocco for friends and family, which Geri, Emma and Mel C all attended.

Victoria – formerly known as Posh Spice – posted a Twitter photo of the ladies posing with her BFF Eva Longoria, saying: ”Spice Girls in Marrakech! #DB40 x vb.’

Mel B also couldn’t make Geri’s recent wedding to F1 boss Christian Horner. The couple married at St Mary’s Church in Woburn, Bedfordshire on 16 May.

To be fair to Scary, she wasn’t the only Spice Girl who had to skip Geri’s nuptials. Victoria and Mel C were also no-shows.

However, Victoria DID send her congratulations. The designer, 41, Tweeted: ‘@GeriHalliwell Sending u love and happiness.Im so sad I couldn’t be with you on your special day x I love u x.’

The next day, she captioned a throwback photo of the band: ‘I love u girls x.’ Awww.

Mel B has now explained why she and her pals couldn’t make it to the ceremony, telling toofab.com: ‘Unfortunately I couldn’t be there at the wedding and neither could Victoria or Mel C because we all had prior commitments.

‘Even thought they’ve been together quite a while, it was like: “Oh I’m getting married in a few weeks.”

‘I was like: “No, change the date!” She looked gorgeous on her wedding day.’

The final event that Mel B wasn’t present for was Isle Of Wight festival, where Geri, Emma and Mel C met up for a boogie. We *love* this photo of the trio enjoying a sing-along.

Now. When are we going to get them ALL together?!
