It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Johnny Depp playing Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates Of The Caribbean, but according to the actor, Johnny’s take on the character wasn’t always such a big hit with Disney. In an interview at the A.F.I Fest this weekend, the star spoke out about how he was pretty sure that he was going to be fired from the role.
‘Yeah, they wanted to fire me,’ Johnny said of Disney executives during the making of the first film, ‘It trickled back to me that Michael Eisner went on some sort of bent about how ‘Goddamnit Johnny Depp’s ruining the film!’ And so I fully expected to be fired, and I got a call from the upper echelon at Disney who were courageous enough to ask me, ‘What the f**k are you doung?”
Johnny went on to explain how Disney were confused about the way he was playing the character and kept asking, ‘Is it drunk? Is it gay?’
‘All I could say was, cause they set me up with a great line, I said, ‘Well don’t you know all my characters are gay?’ I really expected to be fired, but I wasn’t for some reason. They were actually gonna put subtitles under my character, they couldn’t understand Captain Jack.’
Needless to say Johnny wasn’t fired from the film and went on to create one of Disney’s most iconic characters ever in the form of slurring, swaggering Captain Jack Sparrow and it really couldn’t have been done any other way.
