As awards season gathers pace, all eyes were on the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which saw the likes of Matt Damon, Johnny Depp and Saoirse Ronan honoured for their most recent work. While it was no surprise that Cate Blanchett was honoured for the critically acclaimed Carol, her red carpet revelations were more unexpected.

Looking predictably flawless in a Marc Jacobs dress, Cate told Popsugar that she'll be taking some time off from acting in order to learn some new skills. "I'd like to learn to do something, like, be able to fix a car or work a computer. You know, those basic things that a lot of people can do, but I can't. I have a sewing machine — I hope I haven't lost the instruction manual — but I'd like to be able to learn how to use it."

Accepting her award from Saoirse Ronan, Cate joked to her former Hanna co-star: "Thank you, Saoirse. You can get off the stage now. You're too young and talented and gorgeous." The win marks yet another award for Carol, which is tipped to scoop prizes at the upcoming Golden Globes and The Academy Awards.

Other winners of the night included Brie Larson, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Bryan Cranston and Rooney Mara. Rooney was also honoured for her work in Carol, and she revealed how she had initially been "terrified" of meeting her co-star, Cate. "She wasn't different than I expected. She lived up to everything that I expected. And I didn't realize how funny she would be," she said. "She's got an incredible, kind of Australian, wit about her. She's just a normal woman. She's down to earth."

The Oscar nominations will be announced on 14th January, with the ceremony taking place on 28th February. Star making your own predictions now...
